Liberal Democrats in Newton Abbot have launched a petition asking the Conservative controlled Devon County Council to reverse its decision to introduce charges for disposing of various items at the recycling centre, says county and district councillor Gordon Hook on his site.
The chargest are set to be imposed on April 1, and the last weekend before fees set in the Newton Abbot recyclining centre was inundated with residents incensed by the news and very keen to sign up to the petition.
According to Gordon: “If attendance next week end is anything like this weekend I predict chaos next Saturday and Sunday.
“Even longer delays than usual are inevitable, and it won’t be the workers fault, but by the time each vehicle has been ‘inspected’ for what is being brought in, a charge agreed, cash exchanged, change given, a receipt given… if it only adds 30 secs per vehicle then the additional time will inevitably cause extra delays, meaning extra long queues and more frustration.”
A number a people asked for details of their Conservative Cllrs so that they could write to them and complain.
Gordon says: “We think this is an excellent idea.” And so do we. So we’ve cribbed the details of the councillors in Teignbridge who voted for the charges (all Tories) and which voted against (all Lib Dems).
FOR the charges at recycling centres:
John Clatworthy (Dawlish)
James McMurray (Teignmouth East)
Chris Clarance (Teignmouth West/Shaldon/Bishopsteignton)
Stuart Barker (Ashburton/Buckfastleigh)
Jerry Brooke (Teign Valley/Chudleigh)
Dennis Smith ( Teign South/Kingskerswell/Ipplepen)
Mike Walters(Kingsteignton)
AGAINST the charge:
Alan Connett (Exminster/Kenton/Starcross)
Anne Fry (Newton Abbot North)
Gordon Hook (Newton Abbot South)
All councillors can be contacted c/o Devon County Council; County Hall; Topsham Road; EXETER or by email find their name and address on the Devon County Council website.
Some will inevitably opt for flying tipping. please don’t! Pleads Gordon: “We want to preserve the Devon countryside, something else clearly the Devon Tories hadn’t thought through!”
If you want your name /address added to our petition against these stupid charges, email Gordon on gordon.hook@devon.gov.uk
