David Cameron is being misleading – hardly ‘stop press’ news, but the latest condemnation of the Con-Dems in power has come from Devon and Cornwall police, whose chief constable Stephen Otter has said the prime minister is being misleading about the impact of the police cuts.
Last week the letters about redundancy in the police force was posted. The same week that a reduction in crime figures were announced (6% in the total crime last year and 30% over the past five years).
Reported in the Daily Telegraph (sorry), Stephen said: “There is a high risk that crime will go up – and a danger that the public will be anxious – but we need to design what we do around the changes.
“I firmly believe we can do this but I don’t hide from the fact that it is going to hurt and it’s going to be really hard.”
And to quote the paper:
He said Mr Cameron had been “wrong” to suggest last month that forces could make savings and increase front line officers, adding that such “unhelpful” comments “create an environment where we don’t feel we are in this together”.
Whatever has happened to the party of law and order? Maybe they’re easing the way for private security ‘charities’…
