Torbay Labour welcomes £6.8M Torquay town centre investment

The news that a planning application is to be submitted for the Torbay Business Hub at Castle Circus, Torquay has been welcomed by Torbay Labour.

The application for the development on part of the town hall car park will provide state-of-the-art facilities for developing businesses, as well as provide accommodation for those in town that are considering moving away from the area.

The Torbay Labour lot also reckon it will breathe life in to the Torquay and would hopefully increase trade in the town centre.

Darren Cowell, Torbay Labour spokesperson, told the PRSD: “I have spoken with Torbay Development Agency and expressed concerns about the loss of car parking spaces and have suggested that a development that retains more car parking would be more appropriate, possibly with a building that allows for ground level parking.

“This may be made difficult as the River Fleet runs underneath, but as I pointed out, the Victorians managed to build over it throughout the town centre!

“It makes sense to obtain early planning consent as new tenants are more likely to be attracted to an approved scheme than one that could have to go through the hoops other schemes have suffered from.

“It is essential that full and open consultation with business, the Town Centre Company, civic groups and residents takes place to avoid the mistake of Torwood Street,” said Darren.

‘The scheme, which will be funded through private capital and effectively replaces the aborted £36m Civic Hub, will provide for up to 400 jobs. This is most welcome as it is in the heart of the Tormohun ward where I am delighted to be Labour’s candidate on May 5.

“Such a scheme would surely send the message to investors that Torbay is once again open for business.”
