Dartmouth Apprentice – the only training restaurant for the long-term unemployed in Devon – has hosted the second exhibition by its own ‘art apprentice’ Katie Frost.
Photographer Katie won the Art Apprentice Competition at the training restaurant in October, alongside fellow Dartmouth teenager Holly Collings. The pair put on their first exhibition then and the reaction from the public to their inventive pictures gave both a boost in their early career.
Katie debuted her second collection at the restaurant – Holly unfortunately had to pull out of the event because of studying commitments, but sent her good wishes to Katie on her second big day.
The exhibition has been built around a ‘brief’ given to Katie by Dartmouth Apprentice manager Nina Stanesby. The idea behind the competition is to challenge and give the opportunity to the winner to develop as an artist – in the same way that the restaurant tries to aid the development of its kitchen and front of house apprentices, who spend six months in the converted St Barnabas church getting an NVQ, experience and life training too.
“I am really pleased with the pictures,” said Katie. “This competition has definitely helped me to move my career as a photographer on –I have already been asked to do a number of weddings and I am looking for new ways to continue working. I’m delighted to have won the Art Apprentice competition and have this opportunity for two exhibitions close together, early in my career.”
Nina said: “We are so pleased to have Katie’s pictures hanging in our restaurant. Her pictures of food really complement the décor and the food we serve. We wish her well in her career. She has certainly impressed us and we all hope she fulfils her great promise.”
The pictures are to be displayed upstairs at the restaurant for the next six months, and are all for sale. Katie is also available for commissions – if you would like to contact her, use her email: fro...@hotmail.co.uk
