Ahhh… this is the life. Sitting with a nice mug of warm tea in a funky little house on the river, surrounded by nothing but water, trees and the occasional duck that comes drifting past me. And bestest of all? Not only is there a pool table in here, but there’s also a giant recording studio downstairs – yay!
No I haven’t just won the lottery and bought my dream house… I have for the past few days been hanging out at the beautiful Sawmills Studios doing some recording with Nicky (Swann) who is laying down tracks for her new album. I’m playing drums, cajon and a bit of bass and thus far we’ve recorded six tracks.
I spent most of yesterday recording drum and bass parts. My drum set-up is pretty minimalistic, just kick, snare, hi-hat, ride and a floor tom. I’ve been using a very low tuned snare which I have found a little weird to get used to the way it reacts, but over Nicky’s tunes it does sound pretty kewl.
For bass I’ve been using my good old faithful Eko 60s bass which always sounds lovely over pretty much anything acoustic. It does have a really warm double bassy type sound which so far has complimented both the drums and acoustic guitar really well.
Today we’ve been recording cajon tracks which has been oodles of fun. I’ve been assigned my own little ‘cajon cave’ where my sound can be isolated so Nicky can play acoustic in the next room without fear of my cajon thumping coming over her mic.
We’ve just been listening back to it all and I have to say Kartha (my cajon) does sound mighty fine indeedy. Looking forward to hearing the final mix!
So I’d best head back to the studio as I’m on bass duties next, wish me luck!
