Torbay MP Adrian Sanders continues fight to save the NHS

Even though Nick Clegg was singing the praises of this particular package of NHS reforms before the nasty Tories put the kibosh on his half-baked plans for electoral reform, Torbay Bay MP Adrian Sanders has pledged to stand up for the NHS while welcoming David Cameron and Nick’s promise to scale back the free market aspect of proposed reforms.

Adrian says that changes that have already been secured include slowing down the pace of reform to allow healthcare professionals to continue concentrating on providing care, changing the role of the regulator Monitor from promoting competition to promoting integrated care and better collaboration and the inclusion of a wider range of health staff on new commissioning boards.

Concerns remain, however, over the level of private sector involvement in the NHS and that more accountability needs to be built in to the commissioning structure.

Adrian will be raising with Ministers the importance of these points and that providing a comprehensive, high quality and value for money service, free at the point of use must remain a priority.

Over the past few months, Adrian has been conducting a consultation exercise with healthcare professionals in Torbay and their views have contributed to the changes the Government is now making to its proposals.

Adrian told the PRSD: “It is very good news that the Government has listened to the public and healthcare professionals and looks like it is making comprehensive changes. This is a stark contrast to the bad old days of unaccountable and incomprehensible Labour government.

“It is clear that this consultation process must continue to take in the very real concerns of healthcare workers and make sure that the NHS remains a good quality public service that works for the benefit of patients, not to boost private sector profits.”

The Liberal Democrats signed up for this Health bill and now they are claiming that they stood up to change it! The reality is that such was the opposition to it nationally and the trouncing that they received in the last local elections they are running. Is Saunders part of this Government or not? Is he setting himself up to run as an independent? This lot will fail and he knows it and is putting himself into position. Labour may smirk but we all know that was they who started this type of NHS reform of introducing private providers and the Condems are carrying it through to it's logical conclusion.
