Are Teignbridge Tories in favour of charges for recycling? They don't know!

It appears that Teignbridge Council’s new Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Cllr Kevin Lake, doesn’t know if he’s in favour of charges for recycling or not. He can’t even speak for himself!

Teignbridge’s former environmental guru, and still a strong environmental campaigner, Gordon Hook asked the new incumbent if he was for or against the charges that his Tory friends at County Hall have introduced for the depositing of certain materials at recycling centres around Devon.

He says on his blog: “The answer was given not by the PH [Portfolio Holder] but by the Leader and was a classic ‘avoidance of answer answer’.

“He didn’t say ‘yes’ and he didn’t say, ‘no’. So when pressed with a supplementary question to simply say ‘For or Against’, I was told that I would get a written answer…”

And we await what the written answer will contain.

It was only last week that the Teignbridge Lib Dems had to point out that the Tory’s plans to finance a land deal would be put the council in the red for the first time in years. Prompting a u-turn from the leader Cllr Jeremy Christophers.

So far the Tory leadership of Teignbridge seems to be echoing that of the Conservative leadership of the country, where they can only remember the first half of Mrs T’s famous speech: “U turn if you want to…”

Cheers!

I feel very sorry for Cllr. Lake. He obviously had no idea whether the charges were a policy inherited from the Lib/Dems (in which case he could say, "No," or a Tory policy where he would have to say, "Yes."

The last thing he was prepared for was to be expected to think and speak for himself. It always amuses me that we mock the election of a horse,Incitatus, to the Roman Senate while supporting the election here of people who simply do as their party tells them. People might as well vote for parrots.
