When she’s not getting caught out by parking infringements (but really, if a school has a car park they should let visiting MPs use it), Newton Abbot MP Anne Marie Morris is on the campaigning trail. Her latest outing is raising the issue of quality care for old people.
Tory MPs are an odd bunch – what they say sometimes flies in the face of what you expect them to believe.
For example, Anne Marie is part of the South West gang of MPs fighting for fairness with South West Water Charges – a disparity that sees residents of the South West pay far more for their water than anywhere else. An issue that was created through privatisation, yet you don’t hear them bemoan privatisation, just the effects of privatisation.
The same is true of Anne Marie and her stance on the care for older people. She claims there’s a need for proper monitoring and proper regulation. But aren’t the Conservatives the ones who want to pull down regulation? They were calling for even more liberties to be allowed to bankers and financial markets when in opposition (and look where that got us), and they’ve attacked Health and Safety provisions.
On the provision of residential care, she says: “What I have found particularly disturbing is the price that is paid for each of these contracts. I hear that local authorities—I give this by way of an example—are paying £700 in the public sector, compared with £350 for a private provider. Whatever the savings might be, there is no way that, for half the price, the same quality of care can be provided.”
Anne Marie continues her impassioned speech about the importance of good quality care, and finishes with: “because there is no monitoring of quality, cost rules and consequently quality are going down.”
Sounds good, and is this part of the growing number of the centre right questioning capitalism?
