Newton Abbot's Ye Olde Cider Bar wins CAMRA Cider and Perry Pub of the Year 2011

Three cheers for Newton Abbot’s historic Ye Olde Cider Bar, which has picked up CAMRA’s Cider and Perry Pub of the Year 2011.

Famous, or should that be infamous, for only servicing the ladies half-pints up until the ’80s when legal action changed all that and the publicity pulled even more punters in. The other change in the ’80s were the toilets coming inside.

The bar, which has more than 20 local ciders and country wines, has been owned by Richard Knibbs for 41 years, and it’s been in his family for more than 80.

On winning the award, Richard said: “I’m absolutely delighted. It just goes to show that there is still enthusiasm for proper cask ciders. I can honestly say we’ve never been so popular or busy as we are now.”

There are a few kiddie toys in the bar’s back yard, where it’s pleasant to sit at dusk to watch the bats swoop around the playground of the school next door.
