It’s always a good idea to invoke political heavyweights in debates. Not only does it show your erudition, it implies the big wigs are on your side and has a hint of affiliation.
And you don’t get much more of a political hero than “Father of the Nation” (the Indian nation, that is, Mahatma Gandhi). He inspired mass civil disobedience in the quest to gain home rule.
The great man was inspired during the Euro Referendum debate by Newton Abbot MP Anne Marie Morris.
Quoting Gandhi, she said: “Evolution of democracy is not possible if we are not prepared to hear the other side.”
