Buy local food locally! New food guide to be launched

Buy local food locally – that’s the message of a new free publication out on Wednesday, November 2. Called the Newton Abbot Guide to Local Food and Drink, the booklet is a directory of local food producers and retailers in and around Newton Abbot that that sell food and drink – all grown, reared or produced near the town.

With over 40 businesses listed, the guide is aimed at both businesses and the end consumer. The booklet’s editor, Ralph Mackridge, said: “There’s a wide range of excellent food and drink produced very close to Newton Abbot, but it’s not always easy to for the busy shopper to know where to find it.

“Our guide is aimed to inspire shoppers to make local choices, but also to give them clear information about where to find the food and drink. The guide is designed to help local businesses too. So producers can see which retailers are likely to want to stock their products and local retailers will be able to quickly see where they can source local products to put on their shelves.”

The guide is the work of a group of people, many of them volunteers, who are committed to local food and raising the profile of the town.

Lynn McElheron, chairman of Newton Abbot Community Interest Company, one of the partners said: “This user-friendly directory celebrates Newton Abbot’s tradition as a market town – a centre for agricultural and horticultural produce – and looks forward to strengthening the links between the town and its surrounding countryside, between producers and consumers.

“Buying local produce encourages the economic vitality of the town and helps to secure its place as a food centre for south Devon.”

The guide will be available from retailers in the town, the Tourist Information Centre and various public locations, with a website planned for the near future.
