During One World Week people are invited to a free screening of the jaw dropping film Black Gold by Nick and Marc Francis. Campaigners from Brixham will be showing Black Gold at The Edge, Bolton Street Brixham on Thursday, October at 7.30pm. The film tells a moving story about coffee.
“Almost everyone in Brixham must drink coffee as some estimates suggest that around 3,400 cups of coffee are consumed every second of the day around the world. Brixham for Global Action decided to show Black Gold to raise awareness about the inequities in the global coffee trade and to promote ideas that can improve the lives of millions of coffee growers around the world,” says Dr Richard Montgomery, who lives in Brixham.
“Coffee is the most valuable trading commodity in the world after oil. Price rises do not necessarily benefit the small farmers or even the market traders, but the big companies who are able to trade internationally. While the global coffee industry is booming, the coffee growers are in crisis and facing bankruptcy.”
Brixham’s Helen Barrett said: “This event is a great opportunity to demonstrate the connection between Brixham people drinking lattes and cappuccinos and the suffering of impoverished Ethiopian coffee growers.
“The ultimate aim of our campaigning is to tackle the root causes of global poverty and inequality – to achieve justice for the world’s poor. To achieve this aim, we try to persuade Brixham people to drink coffee that has the Fairtrade mark. This is a guarantee that a fair price has been paid, that a social premium has been paid, etc, to the coffee growers. We also want people to try to pressure their politicians to make international trade rules fair for developing countries.”
