The South West Lib Dem MEP is aiming for the presidency of the ELDR

South West Liberal Democrat MEP Sir Graham Watson will this week seek the presidency of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party at its Congress in Palermo, Sicily.

The party has under its affiliation 75 of the 85 MEPs aligned to the European Parliament Liberal Group, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, which Watson led between 2002 and 2009. ALDE is currently the third biggest group in the European Parliament.

ELDR’s affiliated parties also boast three Prime Ministers and 8 of the 27 European Commissioners. There are 55 affiliate parties ranging from the UK Liberal Democrats and the German FDP through to parties from Serbia and Azerbaijan.

Sir Graham is the leading candidate for the Presidency, with the vote due to take place on Friday, November 25. Nominations close on Wednesday, November 23.
