If you are registered as a carer for a loved one a new service available from Dartmouth Caring will give you a chance to take a short break safe in the knowledge they are being looked after.
The new ‘Sitting Service’ from Dartmouth Caring is being provided in association with Devon Virtual Carer’s for whom the charity have been accredited as a Sitting Service Provider as part of the nationwide carer’s wellbeing scheme. The service will run from March this year.
For two years the charity has been making home visits to carry out ‘Wellbeing Checks’ for carers to make sure they are coping and are not neglecting their own health because they are caring for ones they love.
The charity also helps to register carers with Devon Virtual Carer’s to ensure that any assistance and also benefits they might be entitled to can be claimed.
Carer’s registered with Devon Virtual Carer’s receive special vouchers from Devon County Council to use when they need a ‘sitter’. The amount of vouchers they receive is allocated according to their circumstances.
Dartmouth Caring now have a pool of volunteers who are all registered and CRB checked to ensure the utmost safety of the cared for person. And the charity is also looking for more ‘sitters’ to come forward and support the service and the community of Dartmouth.
The service is to provide a short break for the carer to pop out for an hour or two. The idea is to support the carer and enable them to have some ‘me time’ whether to go to the shops, have a coffee with friends and go to the hairdresser or other activities. It does not involve personal care.
To take advantage of this service, contact Dartmouth Caring to make an advance booking request, tell them the appropriate number of vouchers for the time they require and in return Dartmouth Caring will provide one of their registered ‘sitters’, who Dartmouth Caring reimburse for their time.
The service is designed for the daytime – although sitting in the evening is possible, it would only be under extreme circumstances.
