Dear Darren,
Thanks for your email.
As you know, I sponsored a drop the bill amendment and voted against the Bill again, but sadly this was not enough and it was especially disheartening to see so many Labour MPs, who are obviously not under pressure from their party whips to support the Bill, miss the vote.
I remain opposed to many aspects of the Bill and will continue to work with the Government to ameliorate many of its impacts, especially as the details are worked out in secondary legislation. I am concerned though by the very irresponsible scaremongering some campaign groups, journalists and politicians have engaged in.
It is simply ridiculous to argue that the Bill alone will destroy the NHS and people who have been arguing along these lines have severely undermined the very reasonable case that the Bill will not be as positive as Andrew Lansley claims it to be.
These tactics have not only needlessly scared many vulnerable people – which I find unforgiveable – they have destroyed any chance of getting the Government to change its mind.
Do let me know if you have any further concerns.
Adrian
