Fracking is the technique for extracting shale gas from certain geological strata in the earth’s crust, and Devon has some suitable strata from East Devon to the South Hams, which may contain shale gas, says Devon County Councillor Gordon Hook, who is calling for the technique to never be used in Devon.
Gordon, Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Newton Abbot South and District Councillor for Buckland and Milber, has submitted a Notice of Motion to Devon County Council to prevent the use of franking to ever be allowed in Devon.
“The process has been tried in Lancashire, causing earthquakes and damage in the Blackpool area,” says Gordon on his site.
“It is a process that is already banned in many parts of the world, for instance France, Germany, Switzerland, Bulgaria, South Africa and numerous states of the US of A and Ireland.
“East Sussex recently passed a motion expressing their concerns.
“I hope the administration sees the sense of taking this precautionary measure and agrees the Notice of Motion. I don’t want to make a great scene about the issue, so I hope they will say a straight forward ‘yes, we agree… no fracking in Devon’ and we can move on.”
