New health secretary Jeremy Hunt – friend to Totnes hippies? but no friend to health

The monied hippies of Totnes may have found a new friend in the new health secretary Jeremy Hunt.

Jeremy Hunt, who many expected to be out on his ear after being accused of smoothing the way for the BSkyB takeover by News International, is now being said to be unsuitable for the role of health secretary.

It appears the hapless Hunt is an advocate of homeopathy – something which many of the residents of the enclave of Totnes will undoubtedly welcome, but it hasn’t gone down too well with an Exeter University professor.

“To praise the positive contribution of homeopathy to the NHS does not bode well for the new person in charge of UK healthcare. One can only hope that with the reality of the new job, there will be a more rational insight in the actual evidence on this topic,” Edzard Ernst, emeritus professor at Exeter University, told the Guardian.

Jezza Hunt also apparently tried to get the NHS tribute removed from the Olympics opening ceremony (boo!), and his stance on abortion (voting to cut it from 24 to 12 weeks) has been under fire.

But maybe it’s his special skill at wooing business suitors rather than his opinions on health that is the reason he’s landed the health secretary role.
