The Russian communist revolutionary Vladimir Ilyich Lenin (1870-1924) was one of the leading political figures of the 20th century. Lenin masterminded the Bolshevik take-over of power in Russia in 1917, and was the architect and first head of the USSR.
As a professional revolutionary he spent many years outside Russia, where he emerged as a prominent figure in the international revolutionary movement.
Some of this time was spent in Britain, though what Lenin was doing in London is only partly known. However, there is an intriguing photo which is titled: “VI Lenin on holiday in Torquay circa 1907″.
Lenin was certainly in Britain in 1907, researching in the British Library, so it’s possible that he took time off for a Torquay break.
On the other hand, there doesn’t appear to be any other evidence that one of the 20th century’s most well-known figures holidayed in The Bay…
