1,100 children in Newton Abbot constituency living in poverty and don’t get free school meals

Newton Abbot

1,100 children currently living in the Newton Abbot Parliamentary Constituency are not only living in poverty but are not getting the free school meal to which they are entitled, according to a report from the Children’s Society, delivered to Newton Abbot Councillor Gordon Hook.

The figure of 1,100 represents 43% of the children living in poverty in this area.

“To call this a shocking disgrace is hardly sufficient. In this day and age no child should either be living at or below the poverty line and all that are should be getting at least the school meal to which they are legally entitled,” says Gordon.

Gordon has contacted Newton Abbot MP, Anne Marie Morris, to seek her voice in parliament to ‘support measures to rectify this inhuman situation’. And urges others to do the same.

Pop over to the Children’s Society for more information on the state of free school meals near you, and follow the instructions. “It’s easy and very important. We surely cannot allow this situation to continue unchallenged,” says Gordon.
