Remember Iain Duncan Smith’s bravura statement that he could live on £53 if he had to? A bold statement indeed, especially if Iain is planning to carry out his threat without drawing on his inherited wealth. We wondered what South Devon Tory MPs thought.
We asked Oliver Colvile, Anne Marie Morris, Sarah Wollaston, Mel Stride and Gary Streeter: “Could you live on £53 a week? What do you think of IDS’s claim? Should he be made to live on £53 a week?”
True to form, only two replied.
Sarah Wollaston tweeted back: “agree would be very difficult. But we are still borrowing far more than we earn & without action we’d have this & high interest rates”
And Gary Streeter emailed his responses, answering the questions:
2. IDS has been unemployed in the past and therefore has more experience of this than I do. He is a towering figure undertaking a much needed and heroic reform of welfare and has my full support.
3. I do not think he should be made to live on £53 pw.
So there you have it.
If you want to find out more, maybe you could ask your MP what he or she thinks of IDS’s audacious claim, or bring it up when those keen council candidates come a knocking, as they surely will.
And if you fancy, you can sign the petition calling Iain to put his money where his mouth is.
