Just as the sun is rising on Wednesday, May 1, Dartington Morris Men will once again be dancing in Totnes Castle. Last year there was good local support from a number of people who came to watch and share the experience of this tradition. The side is hoping for even more support this year, so why not go along and join them?
In common with a number of Morris dance teams elsewhere in the UK, they dance at dawn on May Day each year to mark the beginning of their summer dance programme.
They like to dance the sun up at various lovely spots across South Devon, and have done so from places such as Dartmoor tors and coastal locations like Burgh Island. This year they have chosen again to dance in Totnes Castle, which is such a perfect spot (with permission from English Heritage).
Spectators make it so much more fun, all eccentric enough to wake early, wrap up warm and appear as if by magic. The castle will be open and they have paid the entry fee, so there’s no charge! They will begin dancing shortly after the sun rises at around 5.30am on Wednesday, May 1.
Each year Dartington Morris Men perform from May to September at locations throughout South Devon, often at or near carefully selected pubs whose hospitality and excellent ales they recommend. For full details see their 2013 programme at the Dartington Morris Men site, or you can follow them on Facebook.
