As long as there’s the spirit of the squire is alive, the spirit of Tolpuddle needs to live on, too, so says Frances O’Grady, TUC general secretary.
And unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’d have noticed the ongoing attacks on working people, and when working people try to organise in the face of said ‘squires’. Here’s a film and some images from the Tolpuddle festival 2013, courtesy of our buddies at the Torbay and District Trades Union Council.
Tony Benn says: “The hostility to trade unions that was expressed in trying to punish the Tolpuddle martyrs is still there, and therefore we need strong trade unions more than ever before.”
Collective strength isn’t such a difficult concept, and may yet be coming back into fashion during the times of rise of zero hours contracts and the privatisation of the National Health Service.
Take a gander, and get ready for next year’s event.
