Brand new and unique in the UK, Interrogate! is the UK’s first social just festival, and is taking place at Dartington as it fresh approach to looking at income inequality, its impact and what we can all do about it.

The festival takes place from Friday, September 23 to Sunday, September 25 and because it’s at Dartington there will be performance, debate, comedy, film, music, workshops, podcasts and ideas. Apparently Interrogate! is about inspiring people to take action.

Some of the UK’s most forward-looking thinkers and activists – plus some fiercely funny comedy and cabaret shows, great gigs and all manner of other performances – will get people inside, under and on top of the issues.

Aside from the performances, debates and podcasts, there are loads of opportunities to have your say.

“There’s a cold winter coming”

“But a warm summer to follow.”

“We could hang around the Prom forever, waiting for the girls to arrive.”

This was John Alderton and Oliver Reed in The System (1964), suggesting that things don’t change.

The System – also known as The Girl Getters in the United States, where it was heavily cut – is the story of a group of blazer-and-tie sporting young men scouring Torquay’s seasonal tourists in search of sexual conquests.

Near the end of one summer, the leader of the group, played by Oliver Reed, aims to conquer an affluent fashion model, but finds himself unexpectedly falling in love. Music is provided by the Searchers, who make a rare film appearance in a club scene.

Directed by Michael Winner (Death Wish) with Nicholas Roeg (Performance, The Man who fell to Earth) behind the camera, The System is described as ‘a great lost document of mod 60s British culture, utilizing the talents of many artists who went on to more celebrated accomplishments… in this captivating, authentic precursor to Quadrophenia’.

The advertising proclaims: “A generation who try not to fall not in love because it’s ‘square’… who fall in love because they’re young…”

Here’s a couple of clips from the film, showing great dancing, indoor smoking (!), the 400 Club, the Palm Court, the Pavilion & a Harbourside fight – featuring a very young David Hemmings:

Another Torquay-set movie was That Summer. Released in 1979, it starred a youthful Ray Winstone.

There’s an ongoing debate over whether it was the follow on from Scum, with the Ray character just having left a Borstal.

The plot consists of two girls who arrive in Torquay to work as chamber maids for the summer. They meet two boys, also in Torquay for the summer, one of whom (Ray’s character) is entered in the ‘round the bay’ swimming race. They come into conflict with a Scottish gang, one member also predictably being in the race

In a Torquay where every time you go out you meet the same people, various confrontations follow and Ray is framed for a robbery in a chemists’ shop. Ray is arrested just as he is about to start the race, though he manages to escape, joins the race, forces the real villain to confess, and, of course, wins.

One scene that caused much amusement among locals was filmed in the Pickwick pub. In the film Ray gets a job and accommodation in the Pickwick. He opens his curtains and gets a fine view of Torquay harbour – rather than the back of Primark.

As with The System, the 400 Club appears, and there are scenes on Oddicombe Beach showing how many people came to Torbay in the past. Also worth mentioning is the fine late 70s soundtrack:

During the early years of silent British cinema, Torbay was home to two production companies: Raleigh-King Productions/Cairns Torquay Films and Torquay and Paignton Photoplay Productions.

Raleigh-King Productions was based at Watcombe Hall. It was established for actor, director, producer Dallas Cairns who was already making films at Ealing.

Two films were made in 1922, Creation and The Island of Romance. However, it appears as if no prints have survived.

Based in a drill hall in Paignton, Torquay and Paignton Photoplay Productions produced The Great London Mystery (1920), a 12-episode serial starring stage conjurer Davis Devant.

Though not filmed in The Bay, The Man They Couldn’t Hang (1921) was a silent film about Babbacombe John Lee.

Claude Friese-Greene (1898-1943) was a British cinema technician, filmmaker, and cinematographer, making more than 60 films between 1923 and 1943.

From The Open Road, a film of his road trip from Land’s End to John o’Groats, here’s Torre Abbey Sands and Cockington in 1924, re-edited and digitally restored by the BFI National Archive. This was Britain seen in colour for the first time:

A workshop in animation is taking place upstairs in the Studio Room at Newton Abbot Library today (Saturday, November 28), followed by the premiere of the behind-the-scenes look at Transition Newton Abbot’s work at the community garden at Baker’s Park. It marks the opening of the View From Here Film Festival and it is absolutely free.

“We wanted to make sure that everyone is included in this festival,” said Rae Hoole, community arts director at Coombeshead College, one of the partners organising the festival.

Lucy Jackson and Andy Coombes from Creative Workshops for Children UK are running the workshop and they have lots of experience introducing young and old alike to the joys of animating. They have worked all over the country offering workshops in animation and craft making activities.

“This is not their first visit to Newton Abbot,” said Celia Hadow of Teignbridge District Council, another partner in the festival, “but we are lucky to have attracted two of the best workshop leaders around to this year’s festival.”
After the family animation workshop, the first screening of a five-minute film will take place in the same building. Artist and filmmaker Volkhardt Muller has been working with Transition Newton Abbot while they documented the work carried about by the group at the community garden.

The View From Here runs form Saturday, November 28 until Friday, December 4.

Hey everyone! Had a good week? I’ve had a rather painful time of it, as shortly after I wrote my last article I descided to pull a load of muscles in my back – no not very clever I know!

I was practicing some Kendo with my friend Lewis (or Loooooooooooowis as he is commonly know… well… by me anyway) and got a little too enthusiastic about a particular move which has since resulted in me struggling to keep in an upright position, and getting out of bed each morning is oodles of fun (erm… NOT! lol)

I am happy to report that it does appear to be on the mend, but it’s still giving me jip for most of the day. It does seem though it’s only when things like this happen that you realise how important various parts of your body are, and this week I’ve learnt that backs are rather important things that you can’t do much without! I’ve learnt my lesson and I will try and be a bit more careful next time…..honest

This week I’ve been having to chill out at home and take it easy for most of the week, which has given me time to read lots of music books I never usually get the time to read. I’m reading a fantastic one at the moment by a lady called Ann Harrison called Music: The Business and if you’re a musical person who wants to learn a wee bit more about the business side of music then it’s well worth checking out. I’ve also been wading through some graphic novels, but I wont go off on a sci-fi rant, I think you had plenty of that last week!

On the musical front, I thought that if I’m stuck at home I could get lots of CDs and press packs sent off for various bits and bobs, so I spent most days online either e-mailing peeps or burning CDs – I’ve applied for oodles of stuff from inclusions in Films & TV programmes to festival dates to magazine interviews. So I’m checking my e-mails everyday egerly awaiting a reply from someone, hoping that just that one person will like some of my music– we’ll see…

…and I was ultra organised and booked my plane tickets for Germany! Woohoo!!

So maybe having a bad back wasn’t such a bad thing after all… ok that’s a complete load of rubbish!

But as my back’s been much better today I’ve been in the studio mixing lots of stuff I’ve been meaning to do for ages, such as live tracks we recorded from The Barrel House gig back in April. If you fancy taking a listen to a Marnie & Me track I’ve just uploaded it to our Myspace page. It’s a song we wrote fairly recently called Crazy World and this live version features Alarik doing his funky beatboxing thang! It sounds super dooper good, so check it out when ya get a mo!

So the rest of my week features the usual two More Restaurant gigs on Thursday and Friday and then Saturday afty is my radio show (Acoustic PM) and then Saturday evening I’m gigging with Marnie @ The Bell in Bovey Tracey, should be good!

Hope you have a superb rest of the week and I’ll catch ya next time

• Check out Katie Marie on MySpace, or on her website.

The People-Centred Economic Development, based in Gloucestershire, has been redefining profit for in human terms. Jeff Mowatt from the company spoke about the social business

Explain your business.
We’re called People-Centered Economic Development, in essence a business with a primary social objective, a social ROI. We began in 1996 with a founding paper describing a new more inclusive economic model for the information age, with the same name as our business.

What’s your background?
P-CED started in the US in 1997 following the founding paper and and by 1999 was working in Russia to source a development initiative and microfinance bank which created 10,000 small enterprises in the city of Tomsk.

We launched in the UK in 2004, deriving revenue from an ongoing software development business.

Why do your ethics play such a strong role in your business, and how does it apply to what you do?
Our revenue is deployed in activism and advocacy for human rights and poverty eradication. We believe that any economic model which includes disposability of humans either by genocide or starvation. Hence we are working in Eastern Europe to leverage investment in sustainable development.

What have you achieved with what you do?
Aside from the Tomsk initiative, since incorporation in the UK we’ve researched and submitted a ‘Marshall Plan‘ strategy paper to the US Senate which has begun to have inpact on government policy

What was harder to implement than you thought it would be?
Certainly. At first we tried a UK community broadband proposal but were unable to attract funding for a model based on a guarantee company. This was a year before the introduction of CICs which are based on similar principles, and we would have been difficult to understand. Then our founder, was excluded from the UK as a visitor. Exclusion has been an ongoing problem of many dimensions.

And yet, founder Terry Hallman resident in Ukraine for the last five years where he continues to advocate for the disenfranchised, particularly disabled children, was commended as an example of excellence in BT’s Seen and Heard awards last year.

What has been the unexpected benefit, if any, to you, your business or the community?
What we hadn’t expected was the influence on mainstream economics which came about because of the credit crisis. Now influential business leaders and politicians talk of more inclusive capitalism under various new labels which brings us a long way from publishing an idea on the web 12 years ago. Otherwise influence on the policies of two governments is something I’d not have dreamt of five years ago.

What have you learnt and what advice would you give to others thinking of starting a social enterprise?
I was reminded recently of part of the script of an old film, Inn of the Sixth Happiness.

In the film, Chinese tradition has five “happiness” wishes: wealth, longevity, good health, virtue, and a peaceful old age and death. “Each person must decide in their heart what the sixth happiness is.”

So, my answer would be to pursue that Sixth Happiness whatever is tossed in the way to divert your path.

How do you view the future?
We started off with a ideal, to replicate localised people-centered economics on a global basis. That view remains steadfast and now seems more achievable.

<g:plusone href="http://www.peoplesrepublicofsouthdevon.co.uk/2009/06/12/culturally-homogenized-devon-debate-over-on-dcfilm/" size="small" annotation="none" ></g:plusone>

A few things over on D+CFilm have caught our eye this week, not least South West Screen’s notion that naming something after a Devon myth alienates people from up-country.

Exeter filmmaker Ashley Thorpe has funding for the latest in his Penny Dreadful series The Hairy Hands from the regional champion (that’s a reference to South West Screen, by the way), but they want to change the title to something, well, a little less Devon.

“I think they’re missing the point and the source of the appeal,” says writer, director and independent filmmaker of the year award winner, who’s recently had his films shown at Cannes, Ashley.

We say it sounds like the thin edge of the culturally homogenized wedge. Have your say over on D+CFilm.

Also on the site is a behind the scenes of the latest Ashley Wing film Robbing Peter, a darkly humorous tale from what we can gather (and a bit of a who’s who in the South Devon filmmaking scene).

Other stories include the announcement of a screenwriter talk at the Exeter Phoenix and a documentary filmmaking course as part of the Dartmoor Arts Summer School.

Hope you’ve had a super dooper week enjoying all this lovely sunshine – my week has been pretty chilled out for a change and I’ve been able to for the first time in ages enjoy the finer things in life – such as a tub of popcorn and a ridiculously large cup of diet Fanta! I am of course talking about heading out to the cinema, something I’ve not done in bloomin aaaaaggggeeeeesss! So it was a real treat for me, especially as I went out two nights in a row!

First up on my list of films to check out was Terminator Salvation. Now, as you may or may not know I’m a bit of a nerd and a huge fan of sci-fi films – especially Marvel and DC orientated films. And yes, I am one of those r-e-a-l-l-y annoying people who will sit next to you in the cinema and throughout the film whisper in your ear ‘Pah! That sooooo didn’t happen like that in the graphic novels!’

But fortunately for me the peeps I went along with are used to my nerdy ways and have learnt to ignore my passionate knowledge about such things. I’ve heard a lot of pretty rubbish reviews of Terminator, so was hoping it wasn’t going to be as crap as the other two Matrix films were – luckly for me it wasn’t at all and there were plenty of Terminator-type fight scenes and explosions to keep me happy.

Can you guess what I went to see the following night? Yep, Star Trek! And boy I wished I’d gone to see it sooner, it’s absolutely brilliant. All the actors were really well cast and I did find myself getting totally absorbed in the story line… and they appear to have set themselves up to make a couple more – horrah!

Another added bonus for me was seeing the trailer for the next Transformers film, which looks soooooooooo good! Being an ’80s child I grew up with Transformers and rather sadly know an obscene amount about the subject, and was possibly *the* most annoying person to sit next to in the cinema during the first film as I so miffed about many factual things (such as Bumblebee not being a VW Bug! Grrrrr!!)

Enough about films and nerdy type stuff! This is suppose to be a column about music lol

I haven’t just been swanning around watching films all week (honest!), I’ve been upto musical type stuff too – last Saturday’s Acoustic PM was so much fun and I have to say a BIG thank you to Papa Fernando for coming into the studio despite all the awful weather and playing a few tunes live, it sounded great and I’m glad they all enjoyed themselves as much as I did!

As mentioned last week I’ve been spending some well needed time in the studio – partly trying to finish off my next album but mostly getting distracted with writing new material. I’ve got so many great ideas and I’m just trying to get them all down and recorded as quickly as poss before I forget them.

I’ve also had lots of dates confirmed for my next German Tour which is so exciting – I can’t wait to be back out there again, and this time I’ll be doing lots of travelling around the country rather than just staying down south. I’m still working hard on brushing up my German but it’s sooooo hard to for my little, weeny brain to comprehend! I did, however, manage to have a small conversation with a guy at a gig recently, completly in German – and guess what? He understood what I was saying! lol So maybe I am getting somewhere!

I’m off to play at More Restaurant now, hope you have a wonderful week and I’ll see you next time!

• Check out Katie Marie on MySpace, or on her website.

<g:plusone href="http://www.peoplesrepublicofsouthdevon.co.uk/2009/06/08/the-geoff-clams-column-premiere-time/" size="small" annotation="none" ></g:plusone>
•This is a new regular column on the adventures of Geoff Clams

On an impossibly sunny and happily recent Thursday, it so happened that I caught the local premiere of John Tomkins’ new feature-length movie, Like an Angel, at Torre Abbey’s Spanish barn.

John is a multi-skilled composer, singer and film-maker from Torquay who, along with his partner Kirsty Symonds, was hosting this special World First screening in aid of Leukemia research. After collaborating on a slew of online videos John and Kirsty (also a singer/songwriter) offer up this, their latest collaboration; a swashbuckling love story that was filmed in and around Torbay and which spans 500 years. The screenplay was written by John himself, who also filmed, edited, produced, funded and scored the picture.

It had been a day of trials. Earlier that afternoon I lost a shoe and some money in the sea and threw up my lunch, all in the space of an hour. In the morning I had left the house early, but had since forgotten all of my Paignton-based life chores and I soon found myself drifting alongside the baked shores.

I was slowly walking to Torquay but had no idea why. Like an Angel is why. An admittedly rough diamond, this film is both a love letter from its director to its leading lady and a barnstorming adventure with inventive special effects and lovable characters to boot.

John’s irrepressible energy frames nearly every shot and for the duration of the film, I was completely entertained. Here is a filmmaker who calls to one’s mind the Renaissance painters of old. A passionate artist who lives by his brush, painting in broad strokes that span the very fabric of time in this bold and beautiful tapestry of love across the ages.

Needless to say, I whistled off into the summer night with my faith in the local arts mostly restored, the film’s big questions still lingering in my mind. If I travelled into the future would my future self be able to see me? What if my future self left the future and went back into the past to see some stuff?

What if when my future self wanted to travel back to the future from the past after seeing some stuff, it arrived in the future too early? What if the other future self was still there, having not yet travelled to the past to see stuff? Would we cancel each other out or would we create two separate time lines in simultaneous, parallel realities? Could these realities exist now? Will we ever unlock them? John Tomkins is a great leading man for local film and the wider creative community should feel extremely proud to have him as their front-runner. Catch Like an Angel when it screens again. You won’t soon forget it.

Anyhow, on that very enchanting evening, I somehow managed to wrangle this here column. I’ll be here every week, spouting. My name is Geoff Clams and I live in Preston on the Torbay Coast. My day job involves designing cultural adventures for a new Buckfastleigh-based steering committee called Project Duvall. I have sat in on two meetings so far and some of the ideas that people are circulating are certainly encouraging. I also enjoy animals, films, books and some television.

Next week, I want to tell you all about some things that happened to me when I went to vote a few nights ago. It’s pretty scandalous stuff.

So any exciting plans for this bank holiday weekend? As you may have probably guessed mine is full of lots of musical type stuff which is always good.

Thanks a lot if you tuned into last Saturday’s Acoustic PM show, it was a really good one and it was lovely to have Dan (Crisp) in the studio. We jibba-jabbered about an ecclectic mix of subjects – from Eurovision to chilli flavoured ice cream (yeah, not quite sure how we got onto that subject!!) but it was oodles of fun!

The following evening (Sunday) was Dan’s gig at The Voodoo Lounge and he had kindly asked me to play an acoustic set of my own before we kicked off with his music, which was a real bonus for me. Loads of peeps turned up and the evening went really well, plus my drum kit sounded super lovely in the Voodoo Lounge.

This weekend is going to be rather manic, but of course I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m going to be playing at More Restaurant this afty and so far the weather is looking like it will stay nice and sunny for me. Then I need to shoot off to The Picture House in Exeter for a gig with Marnie – it’s a new venue for me and also a first to be paid in cinema tickets rather than money! lol But there’s lots of wicked films I want to see at the moment (Star Trek being one of them. Anyone seen that yet?).

Friday I’ll be gigging at Exmouth Festival with Mr Crisp in the Manor Gardens. I’m lucky enough this year to be playing twice at the festival (once with Dan and then on the Saturday I’ll be playing an acoustic set on my tod. I’ve never played at Exmouth Festy before, so I’m really looking forward to it lots and I’ll be taking lots of photos for next week’s article.

I’m defo praying for good weather this weekend, as straight after my acoustic set on Saturday I’ll be heading off to Cornwall for a weekend of music at The Out in the Open camp site in Helston.

They have asked Marnie and me to play on the Saturday and Sunday so we’ve been learning lots of new tunes (they requested Man I Feel Like a Woman, which we’ve had to adapt for acoustic and vocal and now features a Kazoo solo! lol

Then after a wonderful weekend of music in Cornwall I’ve got to head back up to More Restaurant as they’ve asked me to play on Monday as it gets pretty busy at the Cider Press Centre and they thought it would be good to have me up there.

And then last but by no means least, I’ve got to head off to Bovey Tracey straight after my More Restaurant gig as Marnie and Me have to play at The Cromwell Arms…

… then Tuesday I might need to chill! lol

So I’ll be taking ooodles and ooodles of photos and keeping a diary of what I’ve been up to, and I’ll letcha know alll about it next week! Hope you have a wonderful weekend and I’ll catch ya next time

Elizabeth-Jane gets the whole town of Chagford, including such film luminaries as Oscar winner Alan Lee to take part in her community based films and Ashley is at the forefront of what is being called the British Horror Revival.

Both filmmakers are bound in traditional storytelling, yet approach their themes in a modern style. Elizabeth-Jane takes traditional fairytale as her theme (she’s somewhat of an expert on Vicotorian fairytales), and Ashley looks to darker Victoriana, the Penny Dreadful.

For his next film, Ashley is reinventing the Dartmoor tale of The Hairy Hands. Elizabeth-Jane will be making a film about a princess who turns into a dragon.

Spooky stuff. To get the full insight watch the D+CFilm Show, and if you’re into film, check out D+CFilm for the world of film in Devon and Cornwall.

It will be well worth clocking off work early to get to Budleigh Salterton for 5pm tomorrow (Wednesday, April 29) to take part in a multi-media experience on the Jurassic Coast – an arty boogie on the beach to celebrate World Dance Day, the wonderful coastline and the Here and Now.

All you need to do is turn up at 5pm, learn a few dance moves and boogie along with others on the beach, with the sea behind you (you don’t have to be in a train station to get the thrill of dancing in a crowd, you know – ahh, your very own chorus line) and two films made with people who use the beaches projected onto the cliff face to music from Arvo Part.

It’s all been organised by Charlie Morrissey (who is the go-to guy for the Exeter Summer Festival parade), and is the second in the series kicking up a storm on the Jurassic Coast – the first was in West Bay in September.

There’s a whole gubbins about one’s place in landscape, but really this is your chance to shuffle in the sand and have some fun on the beach. Let us know how you get on.
