<g:plusone href="http://www.peoplesrepublicofsouthdevon.co.uk/2009/06/22/newton-abbot-festival-day-set-for-saturday-july-25/" size="small" annotation="none" ></g:plusone>

Newton Abbot is set to turn itself into a fun venue for all the family on Saturday, July 25 (put it in your diary), when the inaugural Newton Abbot Festival swaggers into town.

It’s early days yet, but what’s already in store are, amongst other things, Newton Abbot in Bloom, a Court Leet Ale Tasting, poetry readings and a big exhibition about Darwin with street theatre, and a stage full of activities right at the town’s famed and face-lifted St Leonard’s Clock Tower.

There’s even ‘the Expression Zone’ (you know, for kids) possibly named after the look on all the youngsters’ faces after they’ve been dragged around the Darwin exhibition at Forde Hall. And with a graffiti wall, skateboarding, bmx-ing and djs, this is the Air Fusion-lite section of the day, now that the music festival has disappeared.

“Enjoy a FREE day of Devon at its best,” extols the website. “Why? Because a dedicated group of folk have put a lot of effort into this Festival day.”

And you’d better enjoy yourself, too!

<g:plusone href="http://www.peoplesrepublicofsouthdevon.co.uk/2009/06/13/anti-bnp-protest-takes-place-in-totnes/" size="small" annotation="none" ></g:plusone>

Totnes, you know the constituency of everyone’s favourite mansion-owning MP, Anthony Steen, will be the setting a protest against the BNP’s Euro Election gains today (June 13).

There is no rise in the BNP, they have the same share of the bigoted and ignorant vote they have ever had.

Doesn’t mean we should ever be complacent in exposing and opposing the ‘BNP or any organisation which promotes racial, sexual orientation or religious intolerance’, as they say in the letter they want people to sign.

The problem is the rise of antipathy towards politicians – the active opting out and not voting that took place during the elections.

The Totnes MP was a big part of that pre-election atmosphere of political dislocation with his expenses claims, his offer to pay back 10 per cent and his assertion that the way he spent public money was nothing to do with anyone but him, what with us all being jealous of his lifestyle.

Sure, poor old Anthony Steen wasn’t the only MP caught out, and at least he wasn’t ‘flipping’ – the act of switching a nominated second home to maximise financial benefits. Steeny-boy was just chancing his arm when he supposed protecting his trees from rabbits in Totnes was fundamental in his representing the Totnes people in Parliament.

Totnes town councillor and former Totnes mayor David Horsburgh, told thisissouthdevon: “We must take a stand against the BNP and any form of racism.

“If not, we could sleepwalk into a Nazi-style state, as happened in Germany in the 1930s. We must take action, and take it now.”

We would add to ensure people are engaged in the political process, at least the letter they are sending to the ‘local press and media’ and all the councils will urge support of more affordable housing, improvements to schools, employment initiatives, ‘all of which reduce the climate that breeds ugly, divided communities and which give a security instead,’

Let’s wait and see what’s in store from the new Conservative-led county council on June 25 when they officially announce what they’ll be up to.

Meanwhile, the town council has a vacancy.

The protest takes place in the town between 10am and noon.

Years ago there were wallaby’s at the near by Holcombe, according to David.

But psst, the last picture is of some kind of wild cat, which are a more common sight hereabouts.

Disguising a mobile phone mast as a thicker, taller flagpole has side-stepped planning issues in Newton Abbot.

Vodafone’s first plan for a new mast had a ring of authenticity as they tried to disguise it as a telegraph pole, but that was turned down as adversely affecting the nearby Grade I listed church and its Grade II listed lynch gate at Highweek in the town.

The flagpole won favour though, albeit not with the district council conservation officer, whose report read: ‘Replacing the present flagpole of 74mm diameter with one of 170mm and 1m higher will be a significant change.’

But not ‘materially detrimental’, according the planning officer’s report.

We reckoned they just painted their original plans white. And all to provide the much-need 3G network in the town – who doesn’t get frustrated not being able to make video calls when they’re in Newton Abbot?

Heya there everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful bank holiday weekend – as promised in last week’s article, here’s a full breakdown of my musical (and rather manic!) week/weekend!

At the begining of the week (Tuesday) Marnie and I were in the BayFM studios playing some of our tunes live across the airwaves and chatting to presenter Martin Weller. The following day (Wednesday) we had to head off to the Palm FM studios in Torquay to pre-record a show with John Hogarth for Hogie’s 7-11. As always both were oodles of fun.

Thursday afternoon I was up at More Restaurant – the weather was super lovely and there were lots of peeps up there enjoying the sunshine and music. I had a go at trying a few songs in different styles… I think the best one was a jazz version of Purple Haze which strangely worked!

So after playing lots of wellknow songs in a jazz stylee, I then had to head on up to Exeter Picturehouse for a gig with Marnie. I’ve never been to the Picturehouse before (which for those of you that don’t know is a cinema, and a lovely old style one at that) and didn’t realise that upstairs has a kind of cafe/bar area which is nice and chilled and really good for acoustical type people to play. The other great thing about this gig was that we got paid in cinema tickets! How cool is that!

Friday afternoon I had to head back up to Exmouth as I had a gig with Mr Crisp at Exmouth Festy, this was my first time here so I was really looking forward to making lots of noise in the lovely Manor Gardens. Our set seemed to go down well with the Exmouth peeps and the sound guys did a fantastic job – thanks guys.

Once I’d returned from Exmouth festy I then had to head off to my studio and pre-record my radio show for the next day, as Saturday was going to be a busy one. Pre-recording an hour long show wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be, but I decided to chuck in a few live performances to pass the time which was great fun… four hours later I had it all recorded, mixed and on a CD – yay!

So, along came Saturday – first stop was Exmouth Festy (yes, again!!) as I had a slot on my own to play, which was so much fun and once again the sound guys did a super dooper great job with the sound, which really does make such a difference. No sooner had I finished at Exmouth I had to head off to Helston as Marnie and I were gigging in Cornwall over the weekend.

Although the Campsite in Cornwall that we were gigging/staying at was a nightmare to find, we did manage to make it in good time – horrah!

The place we were playing at was called Out in the Open which is advertised as a gay-run, gay friendly camp site. I’ve never been to a gay camp site before – so wasn’t really sure what to expect! But I have to say that it’s the nicest, cleanest camp site I’ve ever stayed at and everyone who was running it and also staying there were really lovely. The owners had already set up a tent for me which was wicked not to have to worry about setting up my tent (which I’ve not done in a very long time and am probably rather rubbish at doing so!!).

The reason why Marnie and I were booked to play over the weekend was that the camp site (or the camp-camp as me and Marnie called it! lol I know, bet they’ve never heard that one before) were celebrating 10 years of being open, so we gigged Saturday and then Sunday night.

They had set up a big marquee in the field were we were playing at the first night was absolutly freeeeeeezing!! By the end of the night I was quite happy to be snuggling up in our tent with a hot water bottle. The weather the next day was simply gorgeous and I spent most of the day catching up on sleep in the lovely warm sunshine. Bloomin marvelous!

My alarm went off at 7am on Monday morning (gggrrrroooaaann!) as we had to be packed up and gone from the campsite by 8am and off to our next gig (which was at More Restaurant in Dartington and we needed to be there for 11.30am). We just about managed to leave in time and two-and-a-half hours later I was back in my lovely little home town of Totnes.

We were very lucky with the weather as it was raining on the drive up from Cornwall, but as soon as we hit Plymouth it seemed to stop and the sunshine gradually creeped through. As always More Restaurant was lots of fun and we had a really good crowd up there who seemed to enjoy it.

Then once again we had to dash off like crazy loons and head up to our last gig of the weekend which was in Bovey Tracey. This was a last-minute booking at The Cromwell Arms and they had organised an outdoor event and wanted us to play – which of course we were more than happy to.

So we got set up outside as the weather seemed really nice and our first set seemed to go down really well. But by the middle of our second set a big black cloud zoomed over and everyone ran inside!! The landlord asked if we’d be happy to finish off our gig inside the pub, fortunatly we’d only set up my little busking PA outside so it didn’t take two seconds to move and it was nice to be back in the warm anyways!

So after an exhausting weekend of gigs, we all rewarded ourselves with a well earned Chineese take-away – sorted!

Torbay has adopted the the principles of the Transition Town movement, which was set up in Totnes two years ago with the aim to reduce dependency on oil and create a more sustainable economy, which must be odd with the sight of so many oil tankers sitting out in the Bay waiting for the price to go up.

Rob Hopkins, who founded Transition Town Totnes, told thisissouthdevon: “This is absolutely brilliant news. It is part of a very exciting trend. We’re starting to see other local authorities join the movement.”

Torbay’s Cllr Steve Darling submitted the proposal to the council’s annual meeting. He told the site: “This is a very exciting opportunity to allow people to come together and shape their own community and the community they want to become.”

The free bus passes debacle, is due to continue in Torbay tomorrow when under secretary for transport, Paul Clark comes to town to face criticism of the shortfall of government grants to provide the service.

The council says it will be £2 million out of pocket, the Government says oh no it isn’t.

Torbay MP Adrian Saunders, who organised the meeting, told thisissouthdevon: “The Government says it has adequately compensated the council for the bus passes, the council is saying it is much more expensive than the Government has calculated.”

In terms the local shortfall, Torbay mayor Nick Bye told the site: “We do not doubt the Government’s word that overall they have put enough money in the UK pot, and it is a tremendous scheme which we fully support.”

Yes, says Devon County Council, which is pointing people to its marquee at the Devon County Show (May 21 to 23) to find out just how good the cycling provision is.

Cycling, it says, it well provided for: there’s the Cycling’s Tour Series (Exeter city centre transformed into a mile long circuit on Thursday, May 28).

There’s the Tour de Britain (‘which will race for two days through Devon and Somerset on September 17 and 18, taking in a number of towns and villages over 346kms, including Barnstaple, Bideford, Hatherleigh, Crediton, Tiverton, Willand, Honiton, Seaton and Axminster’).

And there are heap loads of leisure trails (including Haldon Forest and the Tarka Trail), plus plenty more including the annual Cycle Sunday event sponsored by Ashfords on Sunday, June 21 to celebrate National Bike Week.

Lester Willmington, Devon County Council’s head of Highway Management and Cycling Champion, told the PRSD: “There has never been so much on offer in the county for cyclists and those who may be keen to re-discover cycling. With two prestigious races in the county as well as community events like Cycle Sunday and a growing network of cycle routes, there’s something for everyone, whether they want to watch the professionals or get out on two wheels themselves.”

We’d like to hear your opinions. (And because this is the PRSD, they can be positive as well as negative.) Comments below, or email info@peoplesrepublicofsouthdevon.co.uk

Just the one Communist is standing in the Devon County Council elections, and if you want to vote for him, you need to be registered in Barnstaple, where the red flag continues to fly (over some beaches at least). In all there are 284 committed souls of various denominations (we presume) fighting it out for the 62 seats, and we’re dull enough to have counted them all.

We say counted, we meant totted up on the back of an envelope in a haphazard kinda way, but who else is gonna do it?

So what’s the line up for June 4? The Conservatives and Lib Dems are fielding 62 candidates; Labour 56; the Greens 42, UKIP 33; Independent 13, the BNP 9 and the Liberal Party 6. Oh, and there are two fellas who have no allegiance, they aren’t even Independent. That should make 286 (including the invisible UKIP candidate).

For you to be as dull as us, here’s the list, we compiled it from info on the Devon County Council site.
