May Day elections

May Day celebration, by Walter Crane

May Day seems fitting to exert some kind of democratic muscle in the running of local politics, and you lucky denizens of Plymouth and Exeter have a chance to vote for one-third of your councillors today.

But just where to put your ‘x’?

The Greens are offering a strong number of candidates, and so are our favourite punch-line of a party UKIP (that’s United Kingdom Independence Party to those of you who want to make up your own jokes).

What isn’t a joke is that the BNP is able to muster two candidates in Plymouth. That two people feel they can ally themselves with that party is bad enough, that they might get votes is a terrible indictment.

Now, off to the polling booths.
