Eat my shorts

You know we were saying that everyone has their own film festival these days? Well, Totnes (surprise!) has got in on the act with Shoot – the town’s first-ever short film festival.

Seeing itself as a platform for cultivating and celebrating the short film format in the region, selected flicks will be shown at The Barn, Dartington on September 11, and the Barrelhouse, Totnes on the September 13, with further screenings later in the year.

So if you’re a filmmaker from the People’s Republic (or indeed Cornwall – boo!) and are interested in having your effort shown at one of the region’s sexiest independent cinemas, download an entry form from www.devonartsculture.org.

There is no restriction on genre, and entering is free but films need to be 15 minutes or shorter (Paul Thomas Anderson need not apply). Entries have to be in by Monday, so you’d better get a wriggle on.

Fidel the odds

As we stare into the abyss of a healthcare system that is being dismantled in front of our very eyes, let’s spare a thought for the Cuban system which produces remarkable results for just $251 per person per year, according to John Harris in the Guardian.
Combine this with the success of the education system and home ownership not to mention the nation’s pugilistic prowess, to the backdrop of sanctions and poverty, etc, then you can start to understand the importance the Cuban experience has.

There are certainly lessons to be had. If only we could all Fidel the odds, just a little bit.
