Offset shopping

Whoa there you carbon offset kings. For a system that has come under fire for shoving the problem around rather than solving it, carbon offsets aren’t the panacea to the modern world’s environmental conscience that they once were – and now they’re available on the high street.

The Co-op’s Travelcare centre on Transit Way, Plymouth, is offering to bung a little bit extra on your holiday costs to ensure the carbon is offset.

Accepting air travel and holidays as a necessary evil of the modern world is part of the offset idea, and the developed holidaymaking UK is hungry to exchange some of the CO2 it produces to those other countries in the world that aren’t making so much.

The ever-engreening Co-op (see earlier story, and the solar panelled Manchester central office) will be rolling out this trial to all its stores in due course. With eight easy-to-use bands for distance travelled (hey, if you go to Spain, cover all the carbon costs with just £3), the Co-op Group guarantees ‘that all carbon offset payments will support its Climate Care project, such as the provision of household ‘biogas’ systems that provide renewable cooking fuel and wind turbines in India’.
